Descripción : Egypt, Roman period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An ancient terracotta figure of a standing bull on an integral base. Size: 6.5 L (16.5 cm) The bull may represent Apis, the Egyptian god of strength and fertility. The worship of Apis was hugely popular in the ancient world and continued through the Greek and Roman periods until almost 400 CE. Provenance: Formerly in a New York private collection, previously deaccessioned from an American museum, acquired in the 1980's.
