Descripción : 3rd-4th century AD. A silver hair pin, the pin staff sharply tapering with round section, worked in a decorative way with horizontal grooves, ending with an open hand holding a small fruit, probably a pomegranate. A similar silver hair pin can bee seen in the collections of the British Museum, accession number 27.122.24, cf. British Museum Press, Roman Britain 1964 / Guide to the Antiquities of Roman Britain, London, 1964, p.28, fig.14.12, British Museum Press, Jewellery through 7000 Years, London, 1978, Hobbs R. & Jackson, Roman Britain Life at the Edge of Empire, London, R., 2010, p.107, fig.82. 9.5 grams, 16.2cm (6 1/4). From the private collection of Antony John Scammell (1937-2019), acquired on the UK art market from 1960-2000. The terminal of this silver hairpin is shaped as a hand holding a small fruit, probably intended to represent a pomegranate, which had connotations of fertility and good fortune. Antony John Scammell (1937-2019) was born, and lived his entire life, in the city of Bristol, England. Already from an early age he was enthralled by history and the heroes that it created. While serving overseas with the British Army, Antony began collecting coins and banknotes and this led to collecting a variety of different items throughout his life. From the early 1960s onward, Antony invested in acquiring ancient artefacts. Antony's vast collections started with Egyptian antiquities, but soon branched into Greek and Roman civilisations. The Roman civilisation fascinated him most and, when family commitments allowed, archaeological digs were coordinated in the west of England. These digs uncovered numerous artefacts, many of which were donated to local museums. In retirement, the collecting continued apace, branching into UK coins, British Empire banknotes and fossils.
