Descripción : Northwestern Africa, Acheulean (Lower Paleolithic) to Mesolithic Period, ca. 1.7 million to 8000 years ago. A pair of large hand-knapped stone tools that functioned as hand axes or scrapers. Both have bifacially flaked bodies and an elongated profile with a rounded grip and a tapered, chopping tip. The broad flaking patterns are remarkably smooth, this desert varnish is from millennia of exposure to the elements and sand. The Acheulean stone tool tradition - named after the location in France where tools of this kind were first identified in 1847 - represented a technological revolution for early humans, homo erectus. It is always thrilling to hold such ancient artefacts and imagine our prehistoric ancestors also holding these stones some thousands of years earlier!
