Descripción : -Lwalwa (Lwalu) Face Mask- -Democratic Republic of Congo- This striking mask was created by the Lwalwa people in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo, who are primarily known for masks such as, this. It features a balanced composition of angular planes and projections characteristic of Lwalwa masks. They have five main categories of masks, two female and three male. Male 'mfondo' masks such as this are identified by, a strongly projecting triangular nose meant to mimic the beak of a hornbill, and an angular browline above narrow, lidless eyes and protruding rounded lips. These features are set in a deep concave face between the brow and pointed chin., The coiffure is designed with a center ridge and a geometric zig-zag pattern along the bottom which has been colored with white kaolin. A cord would have been threaded through the hole located just under the nose, which the dancer would have held, between his teeth in order to keep the mask in place. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America
