Descripción : Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. This is a beautiful and vibrant handwoven and embroidered textile fragment from a tunic band. The orange border frames bacchanalian scenes of abstract and stylized figures that are semi-clothed and nude in bright hues of yellow, green, blue, and red. The ancient fabric is mounted on a custom panel with a navy blue backing, suitable for hanging. A beautiful Coptic textile, replete with fine technique and artistry as well as intriguing iconography! The Copts were the Christian descendants of the ancient Egyptians and the emergence of Coptic art coincided with the decline of the Roman Empire and corresponded with the reemergence of native art in Egypt. Size: 34 L (86.4 cm), custom display mount included. Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, ex-Paul F.
