Descripción : Fragment of a female shrine figure Sierra Leone, Temne wood, greyish brown patina, bust-like cut, dominated by an extremely narrow and elongated head with a prominent bulging forehead, the crested coiffure arranged in several lobes, geometrical incised decor on both sides of the head, metal eyes, dam., minor missing parts, paint rubbed off, insect caused damage (left arm), on pedestal, belonging to the bondo women society of the Temne, which corresponds with the sande society of the Mende clans living farther to the south. Figures of the Temne are rare, they are carved in a style somewhat similar to the female figures of the Mende, called minsereh, which are used to mediate between spirits and humans.
