Descripción : West Africa, Cameroon grassfield regions, Bamileke, ca. 1950 CE. An impressive elephant mask comprised of black cotton cloth panels adorned with multicolored beads, of a dramatic form with a long trunk, round side-disk ears comprised of cloth covered coils of raffia, and eye holes for the wearer to see. The black cotton fabric is meticulously decorated with red, blue, yellow, and white beads arranged in stylized geometric motifs, trimmed with a red cloth border, and lined with a recycled cotton cloth flour sack with the imprint Farina and Societe Cameroons. Elephant masks are quite rare in Africa usually worn by leaders, because the elephant conjures power and grandeur being one of the most majestic and commanding of nature's animals. Elephant societies originated in Bamileke where they were worn by members of the Kuosi regulatory society, including royalty, elite warriors, and wealthy titled individuals. These masks signify wealth, prestige, and kingship. One may find similar examples in some of the most prestigious museum collections of the world!
