Descripción : Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A striking pendant carved from mottled black steatite with dark green inclusions depicting a pair of royal uraeus cobras in their characteristic reared poses. The cobras rest upon a narrow plinth with a pair of concentric horizontal striations and drape the latter halves of their bodies atop a broad sun disk surmounted by a bow-drilled suspension tube. The back of the pendant is flat and unadorned, however, red-orange earthen deposits across the obverse create vibrant areas of color that stand out against the dark-colored stone. The uraeus cobra (plural uraei) is an ancient symbol of royalty, sovereignty, and divine authority that is typically observed on the front of pharaonic headdresses. Size (pendant): 2.25 W x 1.7 H (5.7 cm x 4.3 cm), (necklace strand): 22 L (55.9 cm) Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired April 12, 1995, ex-Colosseum, inc.
