Descripción : The Guro peoples of Cote d'Ivoire revere 5 animals above all others, and one of them is the mighty elephant. The Guro believe that animals represent links between the human world and the spirit world. Salihu Ibrahim of Ghana faithfully represents a Guro-style elephant mask, carved of sese wood with fierce tusks and a long curving trunk. Ivory Coast Guro elephant mask. The BaoulŽ, the Senoufo and the Dan peoples are skilled at carving wood and each culture produces wooden masks in wide variety. The Ivorian people use masks to represent animals in caricature to depict deities, or to represent the souls of the departed. At Je ceremonies, the zamble masks are the first to appear. All Guro masks are sated in hidden tribal meanings and are considered fatal for women to behold.
