Descubra la tasación y los precios de esta y más obras de arte africano en Africartmarket. Ancient African Katsina Terracotta Janus Figure, 2011

Descripción : West Africa, modern day Nigeria, Katsina culture, ca. 200 BCE to 100 CE. A fascinating double-faced head and neck, made of a coarse red terracotta, with a broad neck that probably once attached to an urn. One side of the face is bearded, with a prominent mouth and deep eyes underneath a heavy brow. Ears project outward from the sides of the head. The other face is of a very similar form but lacks a beard, perhaps it is intended to be a woman. The top of the head has what look like thick, raised braids along it. Size: 6.25 L x 5.25 W x 9 H (15.9 cm x 13.3 cm x 22.9 cm) Most Katsina figures were originally attached to the tops of globular vessels, suggesting that they were intended to be funerary markers. Katsina, Nok, and Soweto artisans all created large, hollow, thin-walled, low-fired, terracotta human sculptures. The materials used were terracotta mixed with mica and quartz for longevity, figures were covered with a slip, and burnished with pebbles.
