Descripción : the text on both sides of the cylindrical shaft reading 'the good God, Lord of the Two Lands Khnumibre son of Re Iahmes-Sineith living forever', with ribbing round the base of the shaft which is surmounted by a janus Hathor bust, the cow-eared goddess is wearing a deep, jewelled collar and long wig, a uraeus to either side of her head, part of the naos or shrine-shaped top remaining on the crown of the goddess's head, a uraeus in front of either side, (repaired across the top of the shaft), 22.2 cm. (8 3/4 in.) Provenance: Sotheby's, London, Antiquities Sale, 11th July 1988, lot 52 Basically the sistrum is a rattle, carried usually, but not always, by women and used in religious processions. It consists of the image of a shrine (naos) set above the handle (or alternatively a loop) through which stiff wires bearing metal discs are stuck; underneath is a handle surmounted by the cow-eared face of the Goddess Hathor.
