Descripción : wearing the atef crown and uraeus, his eyebrows and cosmetic lines in relief, his incised beard held by a beard strap, with an uninscribed back pillar, 28 cm. (11 in.) Provenance: Georges Legrain (1865-1917) H.R.H. The Duke of Connaught (1850-1942) Acquired at Spink in 1943 by Gaze Cooper Esq. (1895-1981) and by descent to the present owner In 1895, Georges Legrain, one of the most distinguished Egyptologist of his time, began excavating and extensive restorations at Karnak. In 1907 he was made Chief Inspector at Luxor and was responsible for the publication of the Karnak cachette of seventeen thousand statuettes and figures (Catalogue general des Antiquites Egyptiennes du Musee du Cairo, Statues et statuettes de rois particuliers, 3 vols. 1906, 1909, 1914). H.R.H. Prince Arthur was the third son of Queen Victoria and created first Duke of Connaught in 1874. He had a distinguished military career serving in Egypt, India and the Mediterranean. He was made Governor General of Canada in 1911. After his death in 1942 the contents of Clarence House, London, where he lived were sold at auction. Gaze Cooper Esq. started collecting Chinese works of art, Egyptian antiquities and ancient glass in the 1920's continuing for the next sixty-five years. His collection of ancient glass was sold at Sotheby's in July 1983. For a figure of Osiris with a similar head to this one see G.
