Descubra la tasación y los precios de esta y más obras de arte africano en Africartmarket. A HELLENISTIC BRONZE GROUP DEPICTING TWO WRESTLERS probably from Egypt, circa 2nd-1st Century B.C.

Descripción : both figures nude and one older and bearded and gripping the younger one by the right arm and twisting his left arm back across his back, 20.2 cm. (8 in.) Provenance; French Private Collection It has been suggested that these groups may represent Herakles and the giant Antaeus. Antaeus, a giant from Libya would challenge strangers to wrestling tournaments which he would inevitably win due to the fact that, when thrown, his strength was immediately renewed by the earth (Ge, the goddess of the Earth, was his mother). However Herakles discovered the secret of Antaeus's success and lifted him from the earth and squeezed him to death. Examples of similar groups can be seen in The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and The Louvre, Paris. See D. Vanhove (ed.) Le Sport dans la Grece Antique du Jeu a la Competition, exhibition catalogue, Brussels, 1992, pp. 338-343, nos. 206-209. For a discussion of this type see H. Kyrieleis, Antike Plastik 12, 1973, pp. 133-136, pl. 45-48; and E. Kunzel, Fruhhellenistische Gruppen, (diss.), Cologne, 1968.
