Descripción : **First Time At Auction** East Africa, Ethiopia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A sizable processional cross made from brass mounted atop a conical shaft adorned in cut out triangular patterns. The main body itself is an incredible openwork crucifix with intricate knotwork decorations, 'woven' patterns interlacing like knotwork. Ethiopia developed a distinctly African form of Christianity due to very early contact and introduction to Christian teachings as early as the 1st century, and especially during the 4th century, when St. Frumentius of Tyre converted King Ezana ruler of Aksum. Geometric designs are characteristic of Ethiopian art, the intertwining lattice style possesses layers of meaning and suggestions of order particular to the culture, symbolizing eternal life and relating to the nature of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
