Notes : Exploring the horrors of Apartheid and tensions in the New South Africa, Norman Catherine plays with the dualities of life such as good and evil, primitive and futuristic. The artist incorporates surrealist components to create cartoon-like, semi-human figures. In his sculptural works, he toys with size and form, distorting body parts, and gestures in his larger-than-life and miniature works such as Talking heads.
