Notes : ABOUT THE ARTWORK Richard Mudariki, an award-winning Zimbabwean artist, reimagines classic compositions from the Old Masters of European art history infusing them with a Southern African context. Inspired by Michelangelo’s renowned sculpture Pietà, where the lifeless body of Jesus is cradled by his grieving mother, Mary, after the Crucifixion, Mudariki’s Pieta portrays Jesus as Muammar Gaddafi, once a figure of power and influence hailed as the “King of Kings” by traditional African rulers, now lying slain. The Virgin Mary, dressed in business attire, mourns over his lifeless body. Mudariki’s canvas captures this tragic scene, juxtaposing ancient and contemporary narratives. The artist’s satirical use of iconic figures and symbols provides commentary on the socio-political environment, both within Zimbabwe and beyond. COLLECTIONS: The artist is represented in numerous local and international collections, notably, Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Sanlam Art Collection, Bellville; The Leridon Collection, Paris; The West Collection, Philadelphia and the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Condition_report : The overall condition is very good.
