Notes : Lucky Sibiya’s work is imbued with his uniquely recognizable, artistic vernacular – his formidable approach to woodcut carvings coming to the fore as a strong aesthetic quality visible throughout much of his output. In addition, Sibiya’s experimentation with mixed media, which included materials such as cloth, rust, leather and metal alongside more conventional collage materials, added much intrigue to his practice. So too did his enchantment with the abstract, partially inspired by his father’s work as a Sangoma. In Posting Letters, these qualities are firmly represented as one ponders a collaged, seemingly abstracted rendition of an envelope, complete with a postage stamp ont the top-right. Sibiya trained under renowned South African artist, Cecil Skotnes. Since his first solo exhibition in 1971, he widely exhibited locally and abroad. His work forms part of a number of institutional and corporate collections, including the Iziko South African National Gallery and the Rand Merchant Bank Art Collection.
