Notes : I have often used the open mouth to suggest screaming or uttering as if the teeth are the 'pales' of the persona, and 'beyond the pale' suggests transgression of some kind. Judith Mason, 2011 I paint in order to make sense of my life, to manipulate various chaotic fragments of information and impulse into some sort of order, through which I can glimpse a hint of meaning.” (Judith Mason, 2004) Judith Mason’s works are rich in symbolism – for her a personal reaction to the experience of life. Mason’s motifs are expressed through expertly drafted fragmented anatomy or zoomorphic designs, evident in Mouthpiece: The Laughter of Others. The title supplies an emotional context for the work – that daunting feeling of being laughed at or even the loneliness of being excluded in the laughter of others. The mocking rhythm of the composition is haunting as the tunnel of exposed teeth extends deeper, both visually and internally.
