Literature : Artiste pluridisciplinaire et cosmopolite, Mohamed Melehi est une figure
centrale de l’art des XXème et XXIème siècles. Né au Maroc, il poursuit
de longues études d’art en Espagne à Séville puis à Madrid, en Italie, à
l’Ecole nationale des Beaux- Arts de Paris et aux Etats-Unis.
Designer, photographe, éditeur et peintre, Mohamed Melehi s’illustre
dès le début de sa carrière par une forte implication dans la politique
marocaine, notamment en participant à “Présence Plastique”,
événement fondateur du modernisme marocain. Membre de l’école de
Casablanca et professeur, il oeuvre à la création de liens entre artistes et
civilisations méditerranéennes et participe à de nombreux évènements
artistiques.
L’onde ou la « vague » est une thématique qu’il inaugure en 1961, à
Minneapolis lorsqu’il se passionne pour l’art optique. Dès lors, elle ne
quittera son oeuvre. Celle-ci évoque également - pour certains critiques
d’art - les mers, autant la mer Méditerranée qui relie le Nord et le Sud,
que l’océan Atlantique qu’il traversa souvent lors de ses passages aux
États Unis. En 1963, une de ses oeuvres est exposée au MOMA. La
gamme chromatique évolue également, passant de tons sourds à des
couleurs franches qu’il maintiendra tout au long de sa vie.
Son style pictural, résolument contemporain, se veut l’héritier du travail
du Bauhaus, aux lumières d’artistes minimalistes tel que Frank Stella
qu’il rencontra personnellement.
Son oeuvre a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions, dont récemment à
New-York, Doha et Londres.
Multi-disciplinary and cosmopolitan artist, Mohamed Melehi is a
central figure in the history of the 20th and 21st centuries’ artistic
production. Born in Morocco, he studied art in Spain, Italy, then at
the famous Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in the United
States.Designer, photographer, publisher and painter, Mohamed Melehi
has distinguished himself from the outset of his career by his strong
involvement in politics, notably through his participation in «Présence
Plastique», a founding event of Moroccan modernism. As a teacher and
member of the so-called Casablanca School of Art, he works to create
links between artists and Mediterranean civilizations, and takes part
in numerous artistic events. The wave was a theme he first explored
in Minneapolis in 1961, when he became fascinated with optical art.
From then on, it has been a constant theme in his work. For some art
critics, it also evokes the seas, both the Mediterranean, linking North
and South, and the Atlantic Ocean, which he often crossed on his visits
to the United States. In 1963, one of his works was exhibited at the
MOMA in New-York. The range of colours he uses also evolved, moving
from muted tones to the bold colours he would maintain throughout
his life.His resolutely contemporary pictorial style is heir to the work
of the Bauhaus, in the light of minimalist artists such as Frank Stella,
whom he met personally.His work has been the subject of numerous
exhibitions, most recently in New York, Doha and London.
