Provenance : [Propriété non datée] - A private collection - Marlene Dumas was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa - From 1972 to 1975 she attended Cape Town University, where she studied for a BA in Visual Arts before completing her studies in Haarlem, in the Netherlands - In an exploration of concepts of identity, Dumas's portraits aim to display the inner essence of her subjects and their relationship with the world - Dumas's work portrays the complexities of the human condition through minimal yet highly considered applications - In stripping back the details so evocatively exercised in the history of portraiture, Dumas unveils a new way of portrait painting - Creating a tension between what is displayed and what is concealed, Dumas gives way to the metaphysical rather than the physical elements of identification - Often resourcing her subjects from mass media, such as images of Billie Holiday depicted in six different ways in the present lot - Dumas was fascinated with Billie Holiday's life story in how her race and gender influenced her life and her rise out of obscurity - Witnessing the Apartheid herself, Dumas's interest in the human condition and human relationships was further bolstered - Dumas has held solo exhibitions at galleries globally including Tate Gallery in London (1996); solo exhibitions have also included shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2001); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2001); Art Institute of Chicago (2003); Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2007); Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2007); Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf (2008); the Fondazione Stelline, Milan (2012); David Zwirner, New York (2010 & 2018) - Additionally, Marlene Dumas is currently on show at Frith Street Gallery in London until November 2024 - Today, the artist's work is held in some of the greatest art galleries and institutions in the world including the Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Fondation Beyeler, Basel; Gemeentemuseum, The Hague; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and Tate, London
