Fox, The life and art of Francois Krige, (Vlaeberg, 2000), illustrated p.84, fig.1 "Three important oils derive from Krige's time at Paternoster and Saldanha in the early fifties. In Fetching water, Paternoster - two simplified figures in the foreground with fishermen's cottages behind - a limited and 'whitened' palette of cool, non-naturalistic hues gives a strange atmosphere. The forms are roughly and expressionistically painted in dry, chalky applications. A white sun hangs above the fishing village as if in a mist or haze, casting no shadow. It is one of his more abstract pieces and gives the impression of being an étude, roughly sketched in bold strokes and with a loaded palette knife." (Ibid, p.67)
