Edoardo Villa (South African, 1915-2011) 'Throne' 96 X 71 X 63Cm (37 13/16 X 27 15/16 X 24 13/16In).
Provenance : [Propriété non datée]
- Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg Private collection Bonhams' sale, October 2012, lot 424; A private collection
- The present lot is one of a series on the same theme that Edoardo Villa executed in 1991, inspired by the organic lines of Jackson Hlungwane's carved wooden thrones
- Villa's Throne, however, is a vivid, abstract sculpture composed of curved shapes cut from steel sheets, expressing the union of both traditional African culture and modern European art
- As Villa explored this theme, 'the sculptures increasingly lost all reference to utilitarian purpose and became place and line, slicing into and floating in space, in some sense akin to the paintings of Miro' (Nel 2005, p.104)
- Another Throne from the same series is illustrated in Nel 2005 (p. 105)
- Nel, Villa at 90, (Jeppestown, 2005)
