En explorant deux médiums à la fois, la photographie et la peinture, cet « autoportrait », ressasse inlassablement la question de lidentité, de la contrainte sociale, de l'image du corps sous le regard de l'autre. La répétition à l'infini du même visage semble s'insurger contre le mimétisme et la culture du geste réitéré : « parce que répéter pour répéter engendre la stérilité ». Quand il découvre l'occident, l'artiste est fasciné par la liberté d'exprimer ses propres opinions politiques, sociales, religieuses, éthiques, esthétiques, etc. « J'ai senti qu'il y avait d'autres sensibilités, d'autres convictions, d'autres vérités ». C'est ainsi que Hicham Benohoud nourrit une réflexion sur son identité et son individualité en transcendant l'éventail des possibles de l'expression. Au final, la démarche n'est ni celle d'un peintre ni celle d'un photographe, mais plutôt d'un artiste jouant avec les codes des deux médiums, comme pour sublimer une identité plurielle qui dépasse ses limites par la création, sujet de prédiction pour Hicham Benohoud.The work “Autoportrait“ (Self-portrait) addresses a major subject matter which is found in the whole work by Hicham Benohoud: the question of whether the individual identity is soluble in the collective identity. By exploring two media - photography and painting- at a time, this “self-portrait” endlessly turns over the question of identity, social pressure and the image of the body under scrutiny. The endless repetition of the same face seems to protest against imitation and the culture of the repeated gesture: “because repeating just to do so generates a lack of creativity”. When he discovered the west, the artist became fascinated by the fact that anyone could freely express their own political, social, religious, ethical, and aesthetic opinions. “I felt that there were other sensitivities, other convictions, other truths”. Thus, Hicham Benohoud started thinking about his identity and his individuality by transcending the range of possible means of expression.
