Description : Western Africa, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Guro people, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden pulley carved from wood, capped by a long human face with almond-shaped eyes, a long nose, and a small mouth. The head is has a well-carved, dramatic coiffure. Created and used by the Guro and other groups in Côte d'Ivoire like the Senufo, this type of object is a heddle pulley, placed on a narrow band loom to ease the movements of heddles (part of the looping mechanism of a loom), while, as the curatorial team at the Metropolitan Museum of Art describes of a very similar object, separating the warp threads and allowing the shuttle to seamlessly pass through the layers of thread. These objects, although functional, were often carved to showcase the ability of the weaver and displayed hanging over the entrance to the workshop. Comes with custom stand. Condition report : This piece has obviously been used, with a dark wood patina, a crack in the wood at the top of the head, and multiple perforations drilled through the bottom attachment areas.
