Description : Handle of a fly whisk nandwa add to watchlistBaule, Elfenbeinküste wood, brown patina, in form a standing female figure rising from a circular base, dressed with an apron, free worked stretched out hands holding a bulbous vessel with elaborate carvings, showing delicate scarification marks in the back area, carved necklace, bracelets and tribe-typical facial features, min. dam., on wooden base, prestige object of Baule village chiefs and notables. At public ceremonies and festivals a great number of whisks was displayed in large brass bassins in front of the village chief. They may as well be held by women or girls, sometimes even by the village chief himself.
