Kongo light brown wood, blackened in parts, the base carved with a tribe-typical human head with reduced facial features, the axe-head decorated with elaborate carved ornaments, min. dam., slight signs of abrasion and usage, on base, the Mangbetu live in the northeastern Zaire, bordering the Sudan and the Zentral African Republic. They mainly produced articles of daily use or ritual used objects. Figures of the Mangbetu are rare. They appear individual or in pairs and can be looked upon as representations of ancestors. The shape of the coiffure reflects the lengthened skull which corresponds to the current ideal of beauty the Mangbetu aristocracy always had.
