Description : TRIBAL ART. A WOOD THROWING CLUB, FIJI 41cm l, another Polynesian club and a West African chew stick, inscribed on a label by R J P Simpson (see provenance) Old Calabar Chew-Stick or Tooth-Brush, all 19th c (3) Provenance: R J P Simpson, thence by descent to the present vendor. Simpson's diaries (family collection) record that in the mid 1840s he served on board HMS Cygnet when on patrol off the West African coast. He later held the post of Superintendent of Pilotage for the port of Liverpool and it is possible that the two clubs were acquired from returning seafarers.
