Description : South African interest: An interesting late 18th/early 19th Century tobacco box of Dutch type, rectangular with incurved and bevelled sides and canted corners, base and cover set with tortoiseshell sides engraved with twin armorials flanked by meercat supporters and an extensive view from the sea, probably of die Cape of Good Hope, the corners further engraved with lions, ostriches, giraffes, zebras, urns and trophies, the latter incorporating an anchor, a trident and a Dutch flag, marked only with later Dutch import and duty marks, circa 1800, 12.5cm. long See Illustration
