Description : signed l.r.: Wm Muller 1840/ KARNACwatercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour 27.5 by 45.5cm., 10I by 18in. In November 1838, Muller was greatly excited at the thought of travelling to Egypt since 'in the year 1838, over a century ago, a halo of mystery still lingered around this land of the ancient East. Muller was only twenty-six and, with his exceptionally fine eye for colour, light and shade, his imagination must have been fired by everything he saw.'( Bunt, p. 37). Early in January 1838, Muller arrived in Thebes, which was the highlight of his four hundred mile journey up the Nile. From Thebes, he visited the sites of the temples at Luxor, Karnac, the Ramesseum, the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens. He was particularly moved by the Valley of Kings, and wrote of it 'there is in its sun-burnt rocks a spell which bound me to it... the rocks on either side rise to the height of several hundred feet, and every moment become more wild and rugged in the outline... all nature seems dead, and the only object that may at times pass might be some vulture winging its way across the valley, making one feel more solitary than before by its temporary presence.' (W.J. Muller, 'An Artist's Tour in Egypt, Art-Union, Sep. 1839, p.132).
