Description : Bronze Thebes, Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 30th Dynasty Standing statuette of Osiris, god of the dead Finely engraved details of crown, face and arms Dimensions: 14.6 x 4.2 x 1.5 cm (height x width x depth) Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below) Similar pieces are held by the Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim (Germany) (332), and by the Collection LUGTS in Paris (3473) The bronze statuette originates from Thebes and dates to the Late Period of ancient Egypt, the 26 υ th to the 30 υ th Dynasty (664-342 BCE). It depicts Osiris, the god of the dead, standing, and in mummy form. The statuette is cast in solid bronze and stands on a flat base. The antique sculptor provided the god with a finely moulded face, slightly tipped nose and free, widely protruding ears. The god of the dead is wearing the Atef crown, which consists of the white crown from Upper Egypt between two feathers with interior drawings. The typical ancient Egyptian beard is formed at the chin of this statuette. The front part of the crown is embellished with a Uraeus snake. A further, well-preserved detail are the hands that are emerging from the indicated gown. The god is holding a frond in his right hand, and a long, below snapped-off sceptrein the left hand. The condition of the statuette is age-appropriately well. The all-cast bronze is covered in dark green patina. Face and small details, like fingers, are minimally timeworn. The Osiris statuette is installed on a little modern Plexiglas plinth. The dimensions of the statuette are 14.6 x 4.2 x 1.5 cm (height x width x depth).
