Arpe gives us information on the Chaldeans, on Egypt and other ancient civilizations, about Rome he presents a comprehensive picture of the development of magical thought from the early Greek philosophers, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, to the neotropical esoterism, Hermes Trismegistus , Proclus, to eventually reach the most recent authors, Marsilio Ricino, Cornelio Agrippa, Paracelo, Trithemius, Fludd, Kircher. Chapter V is dedicated to the materials used to make amulets, metals, stones, herbs, and the techniques used to make them effective as magical objects. The VI concerns the mysterious relations between the talismans and astrology, the chiromancy, the ancients alphabets, images and magic words of incantations, relations of sympathy and antipathy between men and stars or, as the work concludes, between the microcosm of man and the macrocosm of the universe.
