This is the rating and price for Six Rare Large Zulu Brass Beads, 2004.0
Description : SIX RARE LARGE ZULU BRASS BEADS, 19TH CENTURY izindondo Large solid, locally cast brass spheres, holes in the centre These beads, izindondo, were multifunctional, either sewn onto a support or threaded on sinew, used as charms when worn by warriors in battle, or for protection when worn on the pregnancy apron as in the time of Cetshwayo, and due to their inherent value the beads could be used in marriage transactions, eight were enough for a dowry (lobola), while graded sets strung together made necklaces for high-ranking women. “The izindondo seem to me to be very typical examples of these Zulu brass beads which were highly valued and therefore quite rare. They would have been cast in KZN from imported brass probably in the form of those large, heavy rings which are sometimes considered bangles… Brass work was made on both royal and commoner Zulu sites” (Email from Dr Tim Maggs, 28/5/2020). 9cm circumference (largest) PROVENANCE Clive Newman Collection. Newman was an Anglican priest in Grahamstown who died 10 years ago. He worked with Mavis Duma in KwaZulu-Natal for almost 20 years collecting a wide range of traditional items, especially headrests recording detailed provenances in interviews and photographs. The kind of detail he provided is unusual and valuable for providing both provenance and research by scholars and collectors. LITERATURE Hamilton, C.
