This is the rating and price for Senufo Yawiige Bronze Ring

Description : West Africa, Upper Volta region, Burkino Faso, Senufo culture, ca. 19th century CE. Impressive bronze ring adorned with sculptural rendition of a chameleon (yawiige). A similar example from the Senufo culture is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. According to the Met's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, Across West Africa, individuals visit diviners when they are ill or have other concerns. Diviners establish contact with spiritual intermediaries during private consultations in order to discern causes of their clients' problems. The practitioners recommend measures to resolve the problem. They sometimes prescribe yawiige, a Senufo term that means something that follows you. Yawiige refers to pendants, bracelets, anklets, and rings that diviners advise their clients to acquire from local artists. The ornaments redress conflicts uncovered through divination and offer their owners protection from harm. Given each client's uniqueness and the personal nature of divination, an ornament's form does not reveal the reasons for which it was prescribed or worn. Chameleons appear frequently in Senufo arts and are considered a primordial animal. Chameleon images often grace yawiige rings, as seen on this example. All of the bronzes from the Pickard Collection and have been checked out with a museum expert on ancient bronze who worked for both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Sackler Foundation. It is extremely rare to find small, ancient African bronzes that are authentic. These are the real deal! Size: Men's size 10 to 10-1/2. Chameleon measures 1-1/4L x 1/2H. Provenance: Ex-B. Pickard private collection, Oklahoma City, OK, Mr. Pickard began collecting African art in 1959 following university study in Africa. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #107294
