Description : SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY height: 23.5cm., 9¼in depicting the Empress in military dress astride a horse attended to by a young African boy, the oval base applied with flowers, with blue factory marks NOTE The mode for employing people of African origin at court in Russia was initiated by Peter the Great, the most famous being Abram Hannibal. Many nobles followed his example in 18th and 19th centuries and it would appear that his daughter Elizaveta Petrovna continued the tradition.
