NOTE
The mode for employing people of African origin at court in Russia was initiated by Peter the Great, the most famous being Abram Hannibal. Many nobles followed his example in 18th and 19th centuries and it would appear that his daughter Elizaveta Petrovna continued the tradition. Most servants were acquired as slaves and upon arrival in Russia, were granted their personal freedom in exchange for a lifetime service obligation.
