This is the rating and price for Sculpture Of A Sitting Man
Description : Fired clay. Nok culture, Katsina, Nigeria, approx. 300 BC (TL-tested)
An unusually captivating depiction and one of the rare, complete sculptures. The man is seated with tucked legs and hands on his knees. The body is of cylindrical form, there is emphasis on the head’s size and form, round with grooves around the forehead and scalp, several of which are straight and with nubs or continuing down the backside, resembling hair. Downcast eyes, small nose and mouth, and a beard on the chin. It is not clear whether the figure is naked or clothed. On the chest is a chain, there are rings around the wrists, the navel is pronounced. A skirt-like formation on the back, with a lightly tapering bottom and above it a belt with several grooves around it. The figure makes the overall impression of an older “wise” man, perhaps a particular dignitary. The typical surface structure of Nok sculptures, due to the high quartz content of the material. Mounted on a black base.

The African Nok culture existed from around 1500 BC to 200 AD. The first finds were unearthed in 1928 accidentally, but their importance was first recognized in 1943 by a civil administrator of the British colony. They are among the oldest discoveries from Africa, only precursed by artefacts from Ancient Egypt. As is the case for most ancient cultures, the name Nok was coined after the site where the first discoveries were made, in central Nigeria southwest of the Jos plateau. The area known to have yielded discoveries at the time when interest in them spurred reached out to the cities of Sokoto and Katsina. Although the connection between is still unclear, the stylistic similarities of the sculptures indicate that the Nok culture disseminated to these settlements. The unique, stylized human depictions captured the attention of many modern European artists.
