This is the rating and price for Pringle Thomas Narrative Of A Residence In South
Description : Pringle Thomas Narrative of a Residence in South Africa (including a biographical sketch of the author, 1840) 230 x 155 The author described on the title-page as the late secretary to the Anti-Slavery League was one of the most famous of the 1820 Settlers and with James Fairbairn one of the protagonists in the struggle for the freedom of the press at the Cape. The first edition of the present work under the title African Sketches appeared in 1834 and immediately afterwards Pringle began revising it under the present title Narrative of a Residence in South Africa omitting the poetry section of the orginal book. Pringle completed his work on 12 November 1834 and died a few weeks later on 5 December at the early age of 46. Although six years were to pass before the book was published it is clear that Narrative of a Residence dates from the same year as African Sketches and that it is the first edition of Narrative which differs also from Sketches by the inclusion of the biographical sketch by Josiah Conder one of Pringle's closest friends. This copy has been finely rebound perhaps by the International African Institute whose stamp has been cancelled on the half-title page. Half-bound in patterned tan calf with two raised bands and gilt titling to the spine and green buckram, double new endpapers front and back, Philip Court's bookplate is on the front pastedown. The text - xvi + 116 pp - is set two columns to the page. Apart from a very few marginal marks in ink and a few small sunned areas and foxed spots the text which is complete is unmarked and undiscoloured. Very Good London Edward Moxon 1840
