His fine engravings presented Egyptian art to a receptive audience and had a substantial impact on the decorative arts of the day. His two-volume Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte (Journey in Lower and Upper Egypt), 1802, is considered the foundation of modern Egyptology.
