Author: Richard Robert Madden - Richard Robert Madden was an Irish doctor, writer, abolitionist and historian of the United Irishmen. Madden took an active role in trying to impose anti-slavery rules in Jamaica on behalf of the British government.
Besides several travel diaries (Travels in Turkey, Egypt etc. in 1824–27, 1829, and others (1833)), his works include the historically significant book The United Irishmen, their lives and times (1843, 7 Vols.), which contains important details on the causes of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Book Details: Includes chapters on epidemic disorders of the mind, the sorcery of ancient times and its relations to modern witchcraft, dreams and visions – Swedenborg and his revelations, St. Teresa, her visions and revelations, the Inquisition in various countries, opinions of Catholic and Protestant Churches on the subject of sorcery, the revived sorcery of Paganism, the Flagellation mania, on malefic spirits. The second volume devotes seven chapters to Joan of Arc. Other chapters discuss epidemic monomania and demonopathy in several convents.
Condition / Notes: These antique volumes have been rebound in new dark blue quarter leather and dark blue cloth. As such, the exteriors are clean and largely without signs of wear. The bindings are sound. The pages exhibit light scattered foxing, most evident in the first volume. The original flyleaf of the second volume displays a closed tear measuring approximately 1/2 near the head. Both volumes contain book dealer's markings in pencil on the front endpapers. The first volume features a laid-in inscription by the author, which reads To / Archibald McLaghlan Esq / This work is presented / with sentiments of respect and / regard by the author / R. R. Madden. The first volume also contains an engraved frontispiece, Jeanne D'arc, by S. Allen from a painting by Paul Delaroche.
