Description : Nonnus Panopolitanus. Graeca paraphrasis sancti evangelii secundum Joannem. Ed. F. Nansius. Leyden, Officina Plantiniana and F. Raphelengius, 1589, 1 vol. (of 2), (32),295p., woodcut printer's mark, 2 initials, contemp. limp vellum. - Without the second vol. Bookblock loose(ning), first few lvs. waterst. in blank margin. Some dam. spots at spine, ties lacking. = With AUTOGRAPH DEDICATION by the editor to Arnoldus Cornelius (1574-1592), minister of the church in Delft. First edition published in the Low Countries of this paraphrase of the Gospel of St. John in metrical verse. The original Greek text with parallel Latin translation by Joannes Bordatus and Erhardus Hedeneccius. Nansius's notes on the text were published in a separate volume, published in the same year, but not present in our copy. Nonnus, a Greek poet born in Egypt, was influenced in this neo-Homeric rendering of the Gospel by the pagan beliefs of the ancient world. Adams B1903, Ebert 14865, Typographa Batava 3776.
