Description : Near Eastern Bactrian Alabaster Bowl 2200-1700 BC. A broad bulbous calcite bowl with waisted neck and broad flange rim. Property of a gentleman, acquired 1985-1995. Alabaster is a name applied to varieties of two distinct minerals: gypsum (a hydrous sulfate of calcium) and calcite, a carbonate of calcium. In general, but not always, ancient alabaster in Egypt and the Near & Middle East was calcite. Alabaster in medieval Europe was gypsum. 3.8 kg, 20.5 cm (8).
