Description : An Important Nazca Sihuas Panel  Sihuas Province, Arequipa, Peru, c. 100 - 400 AD A magnificent, very large cloak ( manta), handwoven in camelid fibers in a double-interlock technique in a dazzling array of colors: red, purple, brown, indigo blue, gold, and white and variations of these. The predominant white color on Sihuas mantles is especially rare. Scholars suggest the design depicts the traditional Nazca anthropomorphic solar deity with splayed arms and legs, the highly abstract face at center has the stream of tears connecting two rectangular eyes, so the figure can be viewed from either direction. These eyes with tears can also be seen as two-headed snakes. This example is better than most, in that the emanating rays from the solar deity are also sinuous, flowing, serpentine waves, creating a visually striking effect. Four of the rays terminate in abstract serpent heads, so the over all effect of slithering, wave-like motion is intentional. Additionally, there are four condors depicted in the upper and lower reserves. In very good condition, the splits and tears (as would be expected for such an old and delicate fabric) are reinforced and prevented from further splitting by careful professional mounting to linen on a frame.
