Description : West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A miniature hand-carved wooden ritual divination implement known as a kedie, with a highly stylized visage that is surmounted on a short stem and a rounded base. The characteristic concave face contains a pointed chin, protruding mouth, slanted nose, and shallow grooves as the eyes under a high domed forehead. The verso of the carving is flattened and slightly concave. Kedie are important ceremonial figures used by village leaders to assist in the judgment of others' actions. Size: 2 W x 4.75 H (5.1 cm x 12.1 cm), 5.3 H (13.5 cm) on included custom stand.
