Description : West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A miniature hand-carved wooden ritual divination implement known as a kedie, with a highly stylized visage that is surmounted on a short stem and a rounded base. The characteristic concave face contains a pointed chin, protruding mouth, slanted nose, and shallow grooves as the eyes under a high domed forehead. The verso of the carving is flattened and slightly concave. Kedie are important ceremonial figures used by village leaders to assist in the judgment of others' actions.
