Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A light-brown wood carving of a standing woman with an elongated rectangular chest and a large crest atop her head. Her facial features are stylized in characteristic Yoruba fashion with large almond-shaped eyes, a flattened nose, cupped ears, and facial scarification marks on either cheek. A staff like this is called an Ose Shango staff, carried and danced with by members of the Shango cult. Shango is the Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning, the woman carved on the staff is meant to represent a worshipper of Shango. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 16.75 H (42.5 cm), 17.125 H (43.5 cm) on included custom stand. Condition report : Losses to crest, one arm, neck, body, and legs. Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, small nicks to face, body, and legs, with a couple of stable hairline fissures, and light discoloration. Light earthen deposits and nice brown patina throughout.
