About the lot N° 74
Title : Masque Salampasu
Size : Hauteur: 76.2 cm. (30 in.)
Provenance : Mme Ernest B. (Claire) Zeisler, Chicago Offert par cette dernière à l'Art Institute of Chicago en 1964 (inv.1964.1082)
Notes : Clair Zeisler (1903-1991) was a noted American fiber artist based in Chicago. She is credited with shifting the two-dimensional craft of weaving into the realm of sculpture. She began collecting art in the 1930's, acquiring paintings by Picasso, Miro and Klee, and, later, works by prominent Post-War American artists, Franz Kline, Robert Rauschenberg and Jenny Holzer, for instance. Even from her earliest collecting days, she collected so-called 'primitive' art, among them African sculptures, tantric art, Peruvian textiles and American Indian baskets. These works were the most relevant to her artistry, and in this excellent Salampasu the association of craft and quality are clear. See Art Institute of Chicago, for the iconic Montol figure gifted by Zeisler (1972.173).
