Description : A WOOD AND REED MALE FIGURE Nigeria, Mumuye 81 cm high Provenance: Vittorio Bellini (1936-2009) collection. The sculpture of the Mumuye community entered only in the late seventies of the twentieth century in the wide discussion on African art, since until then little information was available on the subject. The anthropomorphic figures were used in the field of divination and medicine. Preserved in the 'tsafi' hut, they were used during the initiation rituals of adolescents.
