Among the Makonde, large helmet masks (‘Lipiko’) are more widespread. The smaller face masks are rare and are oft attributed exclusively to the Makonde tribes in Tanzania, where they are worn by dancers on high stilts at the conclusion of initiation ceremonies of young boys and girls.
