Description : Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom/Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1550 to 712 BCE. A pair of amulets, one made of a deep blue faience, the other of black/brown stone, each in the shape of a headrest. The stone example is probably New Kingdom (similar to the example linked below) and the faience one is probably from the Third Intermediate Period. The headrest was a powerful symbol, based on real items that the Egyptians used in life and in death to support the head - the seat of life. The Book of the Dead states that the headrest was important to protect the head of the deceased, and save it from decapitation by evil forces.
