Description : a related group that includes 4 generals, 18 identified company grade officers, many with ôWashington, Gallery, Vicksburgö back marks, 3 identified enlisted men and one Illinois civilian penciled ôJ.P. Vanceö assembled as an album in 1864 by an anonymous owner. Also, 8 additional unidentified company grade officers and 3 unidentified enlisted men. Three of the generalsùBanks, Seigel and Sumnerùare common lithographs, the forth is a trimmed vignette of an anonymous major general by ôJoslyn & Smith, Vicksburgö that we cannot readily associate with that district command. Two non-USCT officers are ink identified as Capt. ôJas B. Dent/14th Ill. Cav.ö (promoted Major, m/o 7/31/65) and ôJ.M. Lincoln/Lieut. 13th Mass. Batteryö (m/o 7/28/65) with another husband and wife view signed ôMr. & Mrs. J. Ringler.ö This is principal musician Melvin M. Ringler, Co. C., 64th USCT (m/o 3/13/66) with Vicksburg back mark and brown and orange revenue stamps on verso. Two other signed enlisted men hailing from Indiana are ôJosel Elliottö (m/o 2/25/65) and ôJohn R. Tuckerö (POW place and date not stated), both privates serving in the 9th Indiana Battery. The core of 16 identified 50th USCT officers are: Lt. Colonel Robert S. Donaldson, (previously Capt., Co. C., 4th Minnesota, Lt. Colonel 50th and 64th USCT, m/o 3/13/65), pistol and saber armed 1st Lieut. John L. Kinney, Co. H. (formerly Pvt. Co. H., 10th Iowa, resigned 5/22/65), 1st Lieut. Peter S. Jacobs, Co. A. (formerly Pvt. Co. A., 10th Mo, m/o 3/20/65), Capt. William B. Garner (resigned 6/17/65), possibly 1st Lieut. John S. Becker, 57th USCT (resigned 1/5/66), a Capt. or Lieut. with indecipherable inked name partly trimmed away, Capt. James F. McGogy, Co. B. wearing diced Scottish tam-oÆ-shanter (m/0 3/20/66), Capt. James G. Dunlavy, Co. H., also wearing tam-oÆ-shantor (m/o 3/20/66), 1st Lieut. & Adjutant John W. Wilson, Co. K & D. (discharged 5/15/65), Capt. Alonzo L. Brown, Co. B. & E., (formerly Cpl. 4th Minnesota, m/o 3/20/66), two different views of 1st Lieut. Andrew J. Hale (resigned 9/20/64), Capt. Edward M. Gilchrist, Co. H. (m/o 3/20/66), also two different view of Capt. George W. Toole, Co. C. (formerly Pvt. 15th & 17th Iowa, m/o 3/20/66), and 2nd Lieut. John T. Murray, Co. B. (resigned 7/18/64). The 8 unidentified officer cartes include a pair of standing pards and a fantastically armed, animated captain holding field glassesù unfortunately severely trimmedùamong other typical portraits. The 3 unidentified enlisted men are non-descript. The 50th USCT was organized at Vicksburg in March 1864 from the 12th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent) bolstered by willing contrabands and participated in several brief expeditions from its garrison post before being assigned to General Steele for final operations against the Mobile defenses in February 1865. The regiment saw action during the assault on Fort Blakely in April 1865 and afterwards was engaged in occupation duty in the Department of the Gulf until mustering out in March 1866.
