Description : 19th century, 15.5 inches height, hand carved wooden pair of male and female figures with incised hair and overall outstanding folk art features, figures are solid wood throughout with each figure having one pegged right arm, man has black stained groove hair, carved ears, diamond carved pupils and black stained carved beard, carved fingers and toes, dressed with handmade cloth pants with separation at back, female has black stained hair, carved ears, oval eyes, pronounced eyebrows with black staining, three vertical line on cheeks, elongated neck, also has scarification on arms, waist, back and chest, carved fingers and toes, has original vegetable dye robe with leather strand beaded skirt, male and female figures are anatomically correct, both figures have minor chipping and dye loss on hair and face, otherwise excellent with original dry surfaces with outstanding patina throughout, accompanying these figures is original hand written document where these carvings were purchased in 1883 by Charles George Gordon while he was serving in Egypt for the English Army, other information explains his life in the war, Provenance: Private Mewbourne Collection
