This is the rating and price for Ibibio Anang Mask Mfon Ekpo Mask Nigeria African, Second half 20th cen

Description : A good example of a mask from an area between Niger Delta and Cross River. This mask can be attributed to bot the Ibibio or the Ogoni.  ,But its features are very  ,close to masks from the  , Ibibio. It is a demanding exercise to identify all Ibibio masks as to their forms and functions for they are subject to many sculptural influences and a number of their cult and ritual activities and the use of masks are drawn from their larger neighbors the Igbo and a number of smaller groups including the Anang and the Oron Ibibio. The Ibibio , people live in the area between the Niger Delta and the Cross River. This area is a largely dense tropical forested area in which the Ibibio living in small village groupings exercise social control through the use of masks and figures representing good and evil spirits.Among the Ibibio masks representing evil incarnate and people who have committed crimes or died in a socially unacceptable manner such as suicides. These ugly masks are known as Idiok Ekpo and their grotesque esthetic reflects those lost souls doomed to wander the night and find no rest. Other well carved and esthetically pleasing masks (Mfon Ekpo) like this one represent all the positive virtues of a well-spent Ibibio life and their attractive features are the opposite of the evil, ugly Idiok Ekpo masks. Thus, Ibibio social mores and the ability to identify good and evil are expressed in their dynamic and creative sculptures. ,For examples of Mfon Ekpo masks and other Cross River art, see Blier's AFRICA'S CROSS RIVER., Marcilene K. Wittmer and William Arnett, THREE RIVERS OF NIGERIA ,I have examined this piece and agree with the description.Niangi Batulukisi, PhD. ,
